If your child is ill or injured, your top concern is likely getting them the treatment they need so that they can start feeling better as soon as possible. But where should you turn for pediatric care—the emergency room (ER), their pediatrician, or a pediatric urgent care center? The first question you’ll need to ask yourself is whether your child’s condition constitutes a true medical emergency. In other words, is it life- or limb-threatening? Some examples of medical emergencies common among children include anaphylaxis, poisonings, and seizures. If your child needs emergency treatment, then you should call 911 or transport them to the nearest hospital as quickly as you can.
But if you determine that your child’s condition isn’t an emergency, you’ll want to avoid heading to the ER, where they often charge high fees and impose long wait times for patients with non-emergent conditions. In that case, you’ll have to decide between visiting your child’s pediatrician or a local pediatric urgent care center. Pediatricians are an excellent option for when your child needs an annual physical or treatment for a chronic (ongoing) illness or injury. But because primary care physicians (PCPs) often have limited office hours and availability, it may be difficult to receive prompt treatment for an acute (suddenly occurring) condition. All of our urgent care centers are open 365 days per year during extended hours and offer online booking as well as walk-in availability (we have locations in Connecticut and New York—click here to find the one closest to you). And for those times when we’re not open or you simply don’t want to leave the house, you can receive virtual pediatric urgent care from a local provider using our 24/7 integrated telehealth service.

Our experienced providers are trained in emergency, family, and internal medicine. In fact, you’ll find many are the same experts who have treated patients in local area hospitals.
Fees vary, though are significantly lower than a visit to the emergency room and generally the same or slightly higher than a visit to your primary care doctor.
