Congestion

Urgent Care for Congestion in Connecticut and New York

Are you experiencing nasal congestion? At Yale New Haven Health Urgent Care, we’ve got you. Founded in 2008, we have urgent care centers across Connecticut and New York, and our compassionate providers are committed to delivering quality care with ease and speed.

Common Congestion Symptoms

The hallmark sign of nasal congestion is difficulty breathing through the nose (many people with congestion start breathing through their mouths to compensate for this). You may also experience:

  • A runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Postnasal drip
  • A headache
  • A feeling of fullness within the nose and/or face

What Causes Nasal Congestion?

When something irritates the tissues within your nasal passages, it can cause them to become inflamed, swell up, and begin producing mucus, which can in turn make it difficult to breathe through your nose. Some of the things that can lead to nasal congestion include:

  • Allergies
  • Bacterial infections (e.g., bacterial sinusitis)
  • Certain medications (e.g., certain high blood pressure medications)
  • A deviated septum
  • Enlarged adenoids
  • Environmental triggers (e.g., dust or smoke)
  • Hormonal changes
  • Nasal polyps
  • Viral infections (e.g., the common cold or the flu)

How to Get Rid of a Stuffy Nose

Nasal congestion usually resolves within a few days, but if it persists for longer, it’s important to seek professional care. Untreated congestion can lead to ear infections, nasal polyps, sinus infections, and other complications.

Nasal congestion treatment will vary depending on what’s causing the congestion. With that said, some common treatment options include:

  • Taking medication (e.g., an antihistamine or decongestant)
  • Using a nasal spray
  • Drinking plenty of clear liquids
  • Using a humidifier

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week.

My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today.
