Building stronger neighborhoods

Yale New Haven Health provides financial and in-kind donations to address or support social determinants of health including food security, job training, affordable housing programs, economic development and other essential services. Our health system is one of the state's largest employers, with over 29,000 employees. Collectively, our hospitals provide support for several economic initiatives in New Haven (CT), Fairfield (CT), New London (CT), Westerly (RI) and Westchester (NY) counties.

Bridgeport Hospital

  • East End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone (NRZ), East Side NRZ, Mill Hill NRZ, Minority Business Association, Bridgeport Hospital Community Partnership
    • Annually, work with neighborhood organizations on projects that enhance the community
  • Periodically, coordinate speakers to address topics identified by neighbors 
  • H.O.P.E. Program
    • Having Opportunities to Prepare for Employment (H.O.P.E.) program provides training, education and counseling to local job seekers. Participants receive classroom training and one-on-one mentoring within Bridgeport Hospital on topics such as interviewing, resume preparation, time management and customer services, and are taught about workplace diversity and meeting employer expectations.

  • Land donation
    • As part of a coordinated effort by the City of New London and Freedom Trail Neighborhood Association to create a park at the long-vacant 0.6 acre site in the densely populated Hempstead neighborhood, L+M purchased and donated the land to the City of New London. 
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Trust Fund 
    • The trust fund awards students of color in New London County high schools $20,000 college scholarships.
  • Hispanic Alliance Scholarship
    • This initiative provides $2,500 scholarships to ten to fifteen Hispanic residents of New London County. 
  • Ocean Community Chamber Maddie Potts Leadership Scholarship 
    • A memorial scholarship open to Westerly or Chariho high school seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, active in athletics and volunteer service.

  • Habitat for Humanity
    • Sponsored and provided volunteers to construct 12 Habitat homes in New Haven’s Hill neighborhood.
  • ConnCAT culinary arts program
    • Support and provide internships for culinary arts students.
