Bridgeport Hospital ranked 'High Performing' in Maternity Care by U.S. News

BRIDGEPORT, CT (Dec. 6, 2022) – Bridgeport Hospital has been named a High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care 2022-2023 by U.S. News and World Report.

“Delivering a healthy baby is a life milestone and what every new parent hopes for,” said Anne Diamond, JD, hospital president. “National affirmation of the quality of our maternity services reflects the skill and dedication of our entire staff involved in the care of new and expecting mothers and their babies.”

The U.S. News award considers objective, evidence-based quality measures based on U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid data. Only the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation qualify for it. Specific initiatives spotlighted include women's services in Ob/Gyn provided by Labor and Delivery, Women’s Care Center and the Primary Care Center, including the Postpartum Cardiac Risk Reduction and High-Risk Obstetric Medicine programs.

Recent advances at Bridgeport Hospital include Post-partum Heart care Program, High Risk Obstetric Medicine Clinic, Complex Care Program and Addiction Medicine Program that provides tailored care to women with high-risk medical conditions. The Bridgeport Hospital Postpartum Heart Care Program, led by Dr. Tabassum Firoz, is one of only a handful of clinics in the Northeast United States dedicated to serving the needs of women who are at increased risk of early heart disease due to pregnancy complications like pre-eclampsia. The multi-disciplinary clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and ensures smooth transition after delivery to promote long term cardio-metabolic health.

“The Complex Care Team has provided phenomenal care for patients with uncontrolled medical problems,” explains Dr. Gupta. “In addition, we have started a Comprehensive Women’s Health Service that nurtures a strong network of various services including Cardiology, Oncology, Ob-Gyn, Postpartum Services, Behavioral Medicine, Addiction Medicine, Geriatrics and Internal Medicine. About the survey: In the spring of 2022, U.S. News & World Report invited hospitals that offer maternity care to self-report their maternity data to U.S. News via an online survey, the Maternity Services Survey, hosted on https://hospitaldashboard.usnews.com utilizing the Zoho survey platform. Primary data collection from hospitals was necessary because quality data available from other sources, such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, were insufficient on their own to evaluate the quality of maternal and neonatal care. Data collection took place over a two-month window and began on March 9, 2022, as announced through a Second Opinion blog post. See Appendix A for more information on U.S. News’ survey process.

U.S. News’ Maternity Services Survey also allowed hospitals to sample their data for particular measures as long as they adhered to TJC’s guidelines. Additionally, the Maternity Services Survey contained six perinatal care quality measures, each requiring a denominator, numerator, and rate, on clinical measures that would form the core quality indicator set. The remaining optional survey questions on birth experience or parent support services were not included in our composite maternity score but provide information on aspects of the birthing experience that expectant parents may seek in the context of where to go for delivery.
