Yale New Haven Health to hold billing and waive some fees for furloughed government employees

Thursday, January 24, 2019

New Haven, CT (Jan. 24, 2019) – Yale New Haven Health (YNHHS) announced today that they will waive copays, deductibles or coinsurance for any furloughed government employee who seeks emergency treatment in one of our emergency departments, urgent care or walk-in centers as long as they present their federal ID at the time of service. This waiver also includes co-payments and deductibles on physician services provided by Northeast Medical Group physicians in our emergency departments, urgent care or walk-in centers. In addition, upon request, YNHHS will put any outstanding bills on hold for those workers who are furloughed due to the government shutdown. This will also apply to partners, spouses and dependents of furloughed government employees and will extend for 30 days after the end of the government shutdown.

The Health System has a patient assistance line where any furloughed patient wishing to have their outstanding bills put on hold can speak with a representative. If the patient bill comes from Yale New Haven Health Services (Bridgeport, Greenwich, Yale New Haven, Lawrence + Memorial or Westerly Hospital), patients should call 855-547-4584 and press zero to be connected to a representative who will work directly to assist the patient. If the bill comes from Yale New Haven Health Services (Northeast Medical Group), patients should call 833-288-4400 and select option 4.

“The government shutdown is causing extreme hardship for many,” said Vincent Tammaro, executive vice president and chief financial officer, YNHHS. “We hope that this small measure will help patients continue to seek necessary medical care without having to choose between their health and putting food on the table.”
