Yale New Haven Hospital names GCC nursing suite

Gateway Community College - New Haven, Connecticut

Yale New Haven Hospital and Gateway Community College (GCC) celebrated the naming of the college's nursing suite with a ribbon cutting and reception.

The ribbon cutting event punctuates Yale New Haven Hospital's longstanding commitment to Gateway's nursing and allied health programming.

"Yale New Haven Hospital has been a dedicated and generous partner since the beginning of our Nursing program," said GCC President, Dorsey Kendrick. "We are so grateful for all Marna Borgstrom and her team have done to support the college's mission to create a first-class healthcare workforce. Wherever you go for health care in this region, you are sure to meet a Gateway graduate."

Housed on the fourth floor in the south building of GCC's new campus, the Yale New Haven Nursing Suite houses three state-of-the-art skills laboratories with 20 patient beds and two private patient simulation rooms with a control room that is outfitted with the latest patient simulation technology. The labs simulate an acute care setting with top-quality medical equipment and high-tech mannequins that act as patient simulators, allowing students to experience real-life medical situations with the ability to videotape student interactions at each bedside for later review with faculty.

"Yale New Haven Hospital has been a proud supporter of Gateway Community College for over a decade, providing resources for the development of its exceptional nursing program," said Marna P. Borgstrom, President and CEO of Yale New Haven Hospital. "This commitment builds upon our partnership, ensuring that the next generation of nursing professionals will have the opportunity to learn their profession in a state-of-the-art facility."

Once students have studied and experienced hands-on practice in the Yale New Haven Nursing Suite, they are prepared to enter the clinical setting and manage real-life situations in a safe and competent manner.

"The Gateway Community College Foundation considers Yale New Haven Hospital among our strongest partners," said Tom Griggs Jr., Chairman of the GCC Foundation Board. "Their generosity has made a difference in the lives of so many, not only in the nursing profession, but for countless patients who benefit from the exceptional training and preparation that the college is able to provide."

According to Sheila Solernou, Director of Nursing and Allied Health programs at GCC, the college has graduated 600 nurses since the program's inception in 2002. More than 200 medical professionals have been hired by Yale New Haven Hospital.

Gateway Community College is one of New England's fastest growing, and the largest Connecticut's 12 Community Colleges. GCC offers more than 100 associate degree and certificate programs and serves over 13,000 students each year who take classes for a degree, professional development, or personal enrichment. GCC students represent 24 towns and cities in the greater New Haven area, including: Bethany, Branford, Cheshire, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, West Haven and Woodbridge.
