Overview

Every minute counts when treating a heart attack. At Yale New Haven Health Emergency Departments, patients are seen immediately by specially trained experts who are available around the clock, every day of the year. In fact, life-saving treatment is often started before arrival in the Emergency Department because of the protocols, communication and technologies coordinated between the emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in our local communities and hospital staff.

Our sophisticated diagnostic equipment helps determine whether you are having a heart attack. If so, special drugs, angioplasty or stent procedures might be used to eliminate blockages or blood clots, significantly reducing damage to the heart.

Heart Attack Symptoms

Common symptoms of heart attack can include these below. Call 911 right away if you have one or more of these heart attack signs:

  • Anxiety, sweating and lightheadedness
  • Discomfort, squeezing or pressure in the chest
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Upper body pain, ranging from your neck, teeth or jaw to your shoulders, back and arms
  • Shortness of breath or acute fatigue
  • Stomach pain

Heart Attack Treatments

Patients who arrive at the hospital with signs of a heart attack will receive an EKG, which looks for signs of decreased oxygen supply to the heart muscle, and a blood test that can show damage due to a lack of oxygen.

Treatment for heart attack to restore blood flow to the heart may include the use of medications, balloon angioplasty or surgery.
