Overview

Interventional radiology (IR) uses minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to treat varied medical conditions. These procedures are typically performed on an outpatient basis by interventional radiologists -- physicians who received subspecialty training beyond their primary specialty of radiology.

Our IR physicians work with nursing and technologist staff to offer minimally invasive, image-guided, non-surgical treatments for vascular and non-vascular disease. IR physicians use hybrid imaging including ultrasound, fluoroscopy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to perform procedures through tiny pinholes, thereby avoiding surgery and long recovery times. Treatments are provided in many specialty areas including heart and vascular, gynecology, gastrointestinal/hepatobiliary, oncology, pediatrics and urology.

Interventional radiology procedures include:

  • Angiography, angioplasty and stenting for arterial disease
  • Endovascular treatment of aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms
  • Lung, liver, kidney, prostate, bone and soft tissue biopsies
  • Pediatric interventional radiology including treatment of liver disease, cancer, and vascular malformations
  • Prostate artery embolization for benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Spine biopsy, ablation and vertebral augmentation for compression fractures
  • Thermal ablation for lung, liver, bone and kidney tumors
  • Treatment of benign and malignant biliary obstructions
  • Uterine fibroid embolization for fibroids and uterine artery embolization for post-partum hemorrhage
  • Treatment of benign and malignant urinary obstructions
  • Venous ablation for varicose veins
  • Venous sclerosis and embolization for varicoceles
