Areas of Expertise

How We Diagnose Urological Conditions

Yale New Haven Health offers a full array of diagnostic services to identify urological problems, including:

  • Noninvasive ultrasound. A painless diagnostic technique that uses sound waves to produce images of internal organs without harm or exposure to radiation.
  • Cystoscopy. A procedure that allows the urologist to view the inside of the bladder and urethra by inserting a thin, lit tube through the urethra and into the bladder.
  • Specialized X-ray. A contrast agent is used to enhance vision during X-ray procedures.
  • Biopsy. Removal of a small amount of tissue for testing.
  • Blood test. A blood test will be conducted if there are concerns with your prostate or it needs to be further evaluated.
  • Focal therapy. A type of therapy that destroys tumor cells by applying different forms of energy, such as heat or cold.

How We Treat Urological Conditions

Urological conditions can be treated through various methods, such as minimally invasive surgery, antibiotics for infections, lifestyle modifications and pelvic floor exercises. A urologist will determine the most suitable treatment based on the diagnosis and symptom severity.

Enlarged Prostate

For patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), known as an enlarged prostate, one way our urologists treat this is by holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). This minimally invasive procedure uses high-powered lasers to remove excess tissue from the enlarged prostate, improving a patient’s ability to urinate. Most patients go home on the same day.

Kidney Stones

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), a minimally invasive procedure that breaks up kidney stones and other stones using shock waves, ureteroscopy laser lithotripsy (UROL), also a minimally invasive procedure used to break kidney stones by directly applying a laser beam to the stone, nutrition counseling and medical management.

Male Infertility

Our board-certified urologists specialize in male infertility and men’s health, including microsurgical fertility procedures—such as vasectomy reversal and sperm extraction – and management of low testosterone and erectile dysfunction.

Prostate Cancer

For patients with lower risk levels of prostate cancer, focal therapy destroys tumor cells without requiring radiation or other surgeries using various types of energy. This treatment not only preserves the prostate but protects urinary and sexual function. Focal therapy can also be used to treat tumors and preserve kidney function for patients with ureter and upper urinary tract cancers. Patients go home the same day.

Surgery

Our fellowship-trained urologists help patients recover faster after surgery by using endoscopic, minimally invasive and robotic surgery techniques using state-of-the-art surgical systems. This surgical approach provides several advantages, including:

  • Less trauma to the body
  • Less pain and less medication needed after surgery
  • Smaller incisions resulting in less visible scarring
  • Reduced recovery time, often from weeks to days, allowing patients to return to normal activities sooner
  • Lower risk of infection and surgical complications
  • Improved visualization of internal organs
