Andrew Bedford, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist in practice since 1998. Dr. Bedford’s medical training was entirely in Boston; after graduating from Cornell University, he attended Tufts University School of Medicine, where he was awarded the Alpha Omega Alpha honors distinction. He then completed residency, chief residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at Harvard Medical School affiliated Beth Israel hospital.
After fellowship, Dr. Bedford moved to Connecticut with his wife, a Yale professor, and his two daughters to begin gastroenterology practice in New Haven, where he became affiliated with Yale Medical School as assistant clinical professor of Medicine. In 2001, he joined Drs. Taubin and Soloway at Northeast Medical Group Gastroenterology Associates. Dr. Bedford is board-certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and was designated American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Fellow status that honors superior profession achievement in clinical practice through the AGA Fellows Program (AGAF).
Dr. Bedford practices general gastroenterology and hepatology with a special interest in esophageal disease. During his fellowship, he was involved in clinical research looking at acid reflux (GERD) and Barrett’s esophagus and offering advanced testing and treatment options for patients with this condition. In 2009, Dr. Bedford became one of the first gastroenterologists in Connecticut to perform radiofrequency ablation for Barrett’s, an endoscopic treatment for patients at risk for esophageal cancer.
Prevention of colon cancer is also a focus for Dr. Bedford. With this prevention goal, he and his partners at Northeast Medical Group Gastroenterology Associates offer screening colonoscopies at Park Avenue Medical Center in Trumbull and Bridgeport Hospital.
Dr. Bedford’s wife, Becca Levy, is a professor at the Yale School of Public Health and has done extensive research on the impact of culture-based stereotypes of aging, which she describes in her recent book, Breaking the Age Code (becca-levy.com).
Dr. Bedford is passionate about music; he plays violin in the Yale Medical Symphony as well as chamber groups and is a co-founder and board member of Music Haven (musichavenct.org), a non-profit organization that provides string instruments and instruction free of charge to school-aged children in New Haven.
