Biography - Elizabeth A. Doyle, APRN

Elizabeth Doyle, APRN and certified diabetes educator, cares for pediatric endocrine patients at the Yale New Haven Health Pediatric Specialty Center in Norwalk. While she specializes in advanced management of type 1 diabetes (a chronic disease marked by an inability to produce insulin), she also cares for pediatric patients with general endocrine disorders including obesity, puberty disorders, short stature, and thyroid disease.

Doyle has worked with children with type 1 diabetes for 25 years. “My goal in practice has been to help children and adolescents with diabetes—and their families—to live full, complete, happy lives, despite having diabetes, while balancing their diabetes management so they can have the best metabolic control possible.”

Seeing children and teenagers with type 1 diabetes excel at school, play a sport, or perform in a concert is incredibly rewarding, Doyle says. “I have been in this field long enough to see some of the toddlers and school-agers I originally cared for now graduate from college and enjoy wonderful careers. Some are even parents now.”

In addition to her clinical work, Doyle is an associate professor at the Yale School of Nursing and the coordinator of their diabetes concentration, where she teaches the next generation of diabetes clinicians and educators. She focuses her research on disordered eating patterns in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes. She also is interested in how diabetes technology can make life easier for patients with type 1 diabetes while improving their metabolic control. “There have been dramatic advancements in insulin pump therapy and glucose sensor technology that have helped prevent dangerous hypoglycemia. These devices are helping young people get into better metabolic control and be more independent as they progress through adolescence,” Doyle says.
