Bridgeport Hospital awarded reaccreditation from Commission on Cancer, American College of Surgeons

Bridgeport, CT (September 6, 2024) – The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), has granted a new three-year accreditation to Bridgeport Hospital. The hospital was recognized as an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program.

To earn CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. The CoC care standards include a review of processes and outcomes with a focus on the full continuum of care, from prevention to survivorship and end of life, while also addressing quality of life.

The CoC survey was conducted in March. During the visit, the surveying members highlighted key aspects of Bridgeport Hospital’s program:

• The administration is committed to the cancer program and supports the cancer committee members at the hospital.
• The cancer committee members work closely together with a patient-centric philosophy. A notable strength of the program includes a dedicated and motivated chair, a cancer liaison physician who does and great job acting as the quality champion for the program.
• The hospital has a highly functioning genetic counseling program and similarly strong programs in survivorship, nutrition and rehabilitation services.  
• The committee members work diligently to improve the survivorship of their patients and remain the backbone of this flourishing program.
