Great Catch winners help YNHH become a high reliability organization
Congratulations to these Great Catch winners for modeling HRO safety behaviors and taking action to improve patient safety.
Ina Cekolli, surgical technologist, North Pavilion Operating Room, was recognized for attention to detail and speaking up for safety. While assisting in a surgical procedure, Cekolli noticed that the patient’s heart rate dropped while a surgical instrument was being positioned in her throat. Cekolli immediately removed the instrument and stopped the line to explain what she had observed. The surgical team tried again with a similar reaction from the patient. For the remainder of the case, Cekolli held the surgical instrument manually in order to closely monitor the patient’s status.
Monica Hammett, RN, York Street Campus Surgical Intensive Care Unit, was recognized for practicing a questioning attitude, 200% accountability and stopping the line when providers were preparing to place a central line in a patient. Hammett noted that the patient’s chart listed a severe allergy to lidocaine (a numbing medication). She stopped the line, preventing a potentially serious allergic reaction.
