Elizabeth Burnett, RN, (left) and Heidi Gaudio, RN, Emergency Department, York Street Campus, provided exemplary care and compassion to a trauma patient who came to the ED with an injury he would not survive. The patient’s family was on the way, but would not make it to the ED before the patient died. Burnett and Gaudio remained in the trauma room, holding the patient’s hands and speaking to him so he wouldn’t be alone and afraid in his last moments. Burnett and Gaudio accepted the award on behalf of all ED caregivers who have provided end-of-life care in a similar manner.
Shari Sisk, RN, Medical Oncology unit (NP 12), Smilow Cancer Hospital, set in motion an outpouring of exemplary patient care involving many YNHHS staff members. When Sisk discovered a patient would be unable to make it to his son’s wedding in Atlanta, she asked what it would take to help him attend remotely. Staff from NP 12, Information Technology Services, Environmental Services and Food and Nutrition were among those who came together to help the patient and his family feel like they were able to celebrate an important milestone together.
