Mandatory HRO training video online

As YNHH continues its journey toward becoming a high reliability organization, it is important to provide opportunities for staff to discuss how they can incorporate safety behaviors into their daily practice. To help, the hospital has created a training video, “HRO Getting to Zero Video 2017.” The video helps managers open discussions with staff about how putting the HRO tools into action helps to create a safer environment for our patients. The video, available via HealthStream, is mandatory for YNHH staff.

Employees invited to donate in honor of Doctors’ Day, Nurses Week

The Office of Development invites employees to donate to YNHH in honor of a physician or nurse who has made a difference in their lives, as a caregiver or colleague. National Doctors’ Day was March 30, but donations are still welcome. National Nurses Week is May 6 - 12. To donate, visit www.givetoynhh.org, or call 203-688-9644.

Career exploration fair April 11

Employees are invited to a career exploration information fair, 9:30 am - 2 pm Tuesday, April 11, East Pavilion Cafeteria special events area. Employees must present their YNHH badge for admission. Representatives from area colleges and organizations will discuss educational programs, and additional resources will be available for employees exploring healthcare opportunities. Blood drive April 17

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at the York Street Campus, 7 am - 5 pm Monday, April 17, East Pavilion Cafeteria special events area. The last 15 minutes of each hour will be kept open for walk-in donors. Pre-retirement workshop April 18

A pre-retirement workshop will be held 8 am - 4 pm Tuesday, April 18, on the York Street Campus in room CH201. Employees may attend on work time with manager approval. The workshop will cover estate planning, YNHH retirement and Social Security benefits, Fidelity Investment options and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in retirement. National Healthcare Decisions Day April 18

Yale New Haven Health System will observe National Healthcare Decisions Day Tuesday, April 18, to raise awareness, educate and empower healthcare providers and the public about advance care planning. Information tables will be staffed 7:30 am - 4:30 pm at the York Street Campus East Pavilion cafeteria and 8 am - 4:30 pm at the Saint Raphael Campus cafeteria. Representatives from Patient Relations, Legal and Risk Services, Social Work, Spiritual Care and other departments will discuss the benefits of making wishes known in advance. Handouts will include YNHHS advance directives brochures and advance directives legal forms. Staff will be available to answer questions and assist with completing advance directives. Weight-loss program begins in late April

YNHH is offering Live Well and Lose It, a group weight-management class for employees and their adult dependents covered under the Yale New Haven Health System benefits plan with no copay or deductible. This eight-session program, taught weekly by YNHH registered dietitians, includes a 30-minute lecture on topics such as best food choices, portions, dining out and staying motivated, and offers confidential weigh-ins plus goal-setting assistance. Class schedule: York Street Campus: 7:30 am and 12:15 pm Thursdays, April 27 - June 12; Saint Raphael Campus: 12:15 pm Mondays, April 24 - June 19 (no class Memorial Day); Medical Center South: 12:15 pm Wednesdays April 26 - June 11. Class space is limited with a group minimum of eight participants per session needed. For information or enrollment, contact [email protected]. Employees encouraged to take cultural competency class

Yale New Haven Health System’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion has launched a new cultural competency class to help healthcare professionals respond to the racial, ethnic and socio-cultural diversity of patients, colleagues and staff. The Cultural Competency in Health Care class, provided at the Institute for Excellence, is open to all YNHHS employees. The class will help participants develop awareness of attitudes, beliefs, biases and behaviors and how they can impact patient care; and help participants improve quality of care, access to care and health outcomes for their patients. Employees, family members invited to Bridgeport Bluefish game

YNHH employees may reserve tickets now for YNHHS Nurse Appreciation Day at the Bridgeport Bluefish baseball game, 1 pm Sunday, April 30, at Bluefish Stadium, 500 Main St., Bridgeport. Nurses and employees may reserve tickets for themselves and their family members by phone, 888-357-2396; or online, bridgeporthospital.org/events. Nurses receive a free admission ticket and food voucher and will be asked for their employee ID number when they register. Nurses’ tickets will be distributed at a special area in front of the stadium on game day. Admission for nurses’ family members and all other employees and their family members is $7 per person; these tickets may be picked up at one of the stadium ticket windows on game day.

YNHHS recognized as a healthy workplace

The Business Council of Fairfield County recently recognized Yale New Haven Health System with its Healthy Workplace Employer Recognition Award, platinum category. The award honors employers who understand the competitive advantage of a healthy workforce and offer a variety of programs to promote a healthy workplace and help employees live healthier lives. YNHHS offers a range of health and wellness resources through livingwell CARES and Know Your Numbers, engaging employees and their families in activities that promote good health and an organizational culture of wellness.
