Emmi video prepares patients for upcoming hospital stay
Yale New Haven Health System recently launched a video that helps answer patients’ questions about an upcoming hospital stay, as part of the Emmi Solutions patient education system.
The “What to Expect During Your Hospital Stay” video addresses topics such as the importance of communication with doctors and nurses, pain and medication management, noise and cleanliness and preparing for recovery at home.
The goal of the seven-minute, interactive program is to educate patients about their upcoming hospital visits, help manage their expectations and provide a more effective and satisfactory experience. Video content is standard for all YNHHS hospitals, with an introduction from each hospital’s president/CEO.
“Education and how we share information to help patients make decisions about their care are at the core of patient-centered care,” said Michael Bennick, MD, medical director, YNHHS Patient Experience. “Educational videos that walk patients through important details about their hospital stay enable them to be active, involved and informed partners in their own care. We believe this will greatly enhance and enrich the patient experience at Yale New Haven Health. In addition, better communication with patients about their expectations before a hospital stay helps to improve their satisfaction afterward.”
Any patient who is scheduled for an overnight stay at any YNHHS delivery network will receive a MyChart message, email or phone call with instructions on viewing the program before arriving at the hospital. Patients will receive their programs automatically, but to encourage patient compliance, staff are asked to mention Emmi during patient interactions and ask patients or families if they have questions after viewing the program.
