The Yale Medical Symphony Orchestra presents its spring concert, 7:30 pm Friday, April 29, Harkness Auditorium, Yale School of Medicine, 333 Cedar St., New Haven. Under the direction of Robert Smith, the symphony will perform Richard Wagner’s overture to The Flying Dutchman and Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The concert is free and open to the public.
YNHH’s registered dietitians invite employees to enroll in the Muscle into May program that starts May 2. Employees will learn how to improve their health, performance and body composition during group classes to be held Mondays at 7 am, York Street Campus East Pavilion, Max Taffel conference rooms A-B; and Tuesdays at noon, at a location to be announced. The program is covered by the YNHHS benefits plan. Participants who complete brief pre- and post-program surveys will be entered into a raffle for a free, one-month membership at the livingwell Fitness Center and two 30-minute personal training sessions.
Employee and Family Resources (EFR) will hold Mindfulness Solutions, an eight-week course designed to bring caregivers more balance and well-being. The classes, to be held 12:30 - 1:30 pm Mondays, May 2 through June 27, North Pavilion 4-101B, will cover meditation, body scans, mindful movement and other practices. On Wednesday, May 4 and Thursday, May 5, representatives from the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) will visit Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. The BFHI is an international program that encourages hospitals to implement practices that protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The baby-friendly application is an extensive process culminating in the site visit, during which any employee could be asked about the hospital’s efforts to promote breast feeding, including providing nursing mothers’ rooms, not distributing pacifiers to newborns and other practices. Designated Baby-Friendly hospitals provide the highest level of care in infant nutrition education, mother-infant bonding and confidence-building in the parenting process.
The Heart and Vascular Center invites employees to walk with Yale New Haven Health to support the American Heart Association’s annual New Haven Heart Walk, 10 am Saturday, May 7, Savin Rock Park, West Haven. The three-mile walk includes events for all ages; leashed dogs are also welcome. Health and wellness information will be on display in the AHA wellness tent beginning at 9 am. Healthy snacks and t-shirts will be available for YNHHS walkers in the YNHHS/Yale University tent; team members should register by April 29 to receive a shirt.
