Substantial increases in patient volume and acuity, competitive compensation and benefits at other hospitals and employee feedback are some of the key reasons Yale New Haven leaders have significantly enhanced compensation and benefits and other programs.
Richard D’Aquila, YNHH president, highlighted some of the challenges employees and the hospital have faced in recent years in a video for employees available on the intranet. Details on the compensation and benefits programs and other changes are on page 1 and from HRConnect.
D’Aquila noted that 2019 was an “incredibly busy year,” during which YNHH cared for an average of 50 more inpatients than budgeted for. More heart transplants were performed at the hospital in June 2019 than in all of 2017; and the Y Access transfer center handled a record 700 patient transfers to YNHH in July.
“We can’t change our mission and our role as a safety-net hospital. We will continue to see the sickest patients, and our volume will continue to grow,” D’Aquila said. “What we can do is make some very real improvements to your working conditions and your career at Yale New Haven.”
To improve staffing levels, the hospital is budgeting for higher patient volume and giving managers additional funds to hire clinical and non-clinical staff during surges. These measures are in addition to compensation and benefits enhancements designed to attract and retain the most qualified employees.
Finally, employees will pay less for parking and public transportation, and the hospital is planning to make more parking available in 2020. Watch for more details about these changes.
