Cancer patients in the Greater Bridgeport area now have an outpatient center in Trumbull. Located at Bridgeport Hospital’s 5520 Park Avenue complex, the Smilow Cancer Care Center is part of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven and one of 10 Smilow Cancer Care Centers in the state.
“The facility opened in September 2014 to give Bridgeport-area residents greater access to high-level specialty care,” said Robert Folman, MD, chief of Medical Oncology at Bridgeport Hospital. “It is just off Merritt Parkway Exit 47, a great location for residents of Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfi eld, Trumbull and beyond.”
Patients there will fi nd the latest screening and diagnostic tests, genetic testing and counseling, chemotherapy, infusions, a dedicated pharmacy, pain management, nutritional counseling, clinical trials and follow-up care. Diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy are also available on-site.
“Everything that does not require inpatient care is offered here,” explained Dr. Folman.
Services will expand when a new 120,000-square-foot medical offi ce building under construction there is completed in spring 2016. “Plans include adding a surgical suite and an endoscopy suite, as well as access to other surgical subspecialties,” he added.
“Its focus is outpatient care,” he noted. “Nearly everything our cancer patients need will be provided here when the project is completed.”
Just as important is the personalized, compassionate care provided by the physicians, nurses and technicians at the Trumbull facility, “It’s part of our philosophy of care, to provide the emotional support that patients need as well as the highest level of medical treatment,” said Dr. Folman. “Increasing the services we provide here will not decrease the level of personalized care we provide.”
