The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit staff was honored for compassionate, patient-centered care on behalf of a patient and family. In October, when the bereavement team began difficult conversations about transitioning the patient to comfort care, the child’s parents expressed their wish that he be able to experience Christmas before supportive care was withdrawn. The team converted the 10th floor bereavement room into a holiday scene, with a Christmas tree, caroling, stories, presents and a visit from Santa. The family was grateful to have holiday memories with their child.
Anibelle Carbo, RN, Pediatric Emergency Department, was honored for caring and compassion on behalf of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle just outside the hospital. Carbo, who was on her way home, immediately provided medical assistance, performing CPR on the victim and accompanying him in the ambulance to the ED while continuing compressions. Carbo’s actions were recognized as an example of what it means to truly go above and beyond for a patient.
