These employees received PEACE (Patient Experience Award for Caring and Excellence) recognition for going above and beyond to meet patients’ and families’ needs. A team from Trauma Surgery (SP 6-4) was honored for extra efforts for an elderly patient who, though he had lived in the U.S. for a number of years, was a Canadian citizen. With his life partner no longer able to care for him at home, the team determined the best option was to coordinate a transfer so the patient could be near his family in Canada. Kerina George, case manager, Care Management, worked closely with the Canadian consulate to complete the necessary legal documents. Because the patient was unable to travel on his own, Kennedy Hampton, chaplain, Spiritual Care, volunteered to escort him on the flight. The patient was reunited with his family before passing away several weeks later.
