Efforts to prevent and address workplace violence continue throughout Yale New Haven Health System and now include a tool providing step-by-step instructions on what employees can do if a violent or threatening event occurs in their area.
The tool, created by the YNHHS Workplace Violence Prevention Committee, was translated into a Care Signature Pathway available in Epic and on the employee intranet. Care Signature Pathways combine evidence, consensus and clinical decision support to guide best practice, reduce clinician burden and promote equity and access across YNHHS.
This Care Signature Pathway outlines steps to take during incidents involving adults in the ambulatory, Emergency Department or inpatient settings. Any employee can use the tool, which provides initial steps to address incidents; steps to take if verbal abuse has occurred; and advice for employee-related incidents. It also includes many support services and resources for staff.
