Maggie Eng, RN; Miroslaw Gruszkos, RN
Congratulations to these Great Catch winners for modeling HRO safety behaviors and taking action to improve patient safety.
Maggie Eng, RN, MICU (Verdi 3 North and West), was recognized for attention to detail and practicing 200% accountability while caring for a patient with dementia in the MICU step-down unit. Eng saw a foreign body in the esophagus of a patient with a feeding tube, prompting her to view the patient’s X-rays. She then checked the patient’s belongings and discovered that a ring was missing from the list of valuables. The ring was successfully retrieved from the patient.
Miroslaw Gruszkos, RN, ICU RSU, was recognized for attention to detail, speaking up for safety and escalating concerns during a neuro-vascular assessment on a patient whose thumb had been reattached. Gruszkos was orienting in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit when he discovered a significant change in the thumb. He shared his findings with another clinician, who believed a pulse was present. Gruszkos then escalated his concerns to Plastic and Vascular surgery. The patient returned to the OR for an eight-hour surgery to re-establish blood flow to the thumb.
