Great Catch winners help YNHH become a high reliability organization
Congratulations to these Great Catch winners for modeling HRO safety behaviors and taking action to improve patient safety.
Inpatient
Maryanne Franzis, RN, Emergency Department, was honored for attention to detail when a combative patient arrived at the ED. The report from the scene indicated clinical conditions associated with drug use. However, Franzis noticed the patient had a significant change in status in the ambulance bay. She suspected the patient’s symptoms were neurologic, not drug-related, and she called for assistance. The patient was found to have a head bleed and was immediately treated.
Outpatient
Matthew Gregory, chief technologist, Diagnostic Imaging Nuclear Medicine, was recognized for 200% accountability and validating and verifying a thyroid uptake calculation. The clinical team was discussing changing a patient’s treatment plan when Gregory cross-checked the calculation and determined the dose had been overestimated. He escalated his concerns to the radiologist, who, after discussion with the referring provider, stopped the line and did not change treatment.
