Melissa Weimer, DO
The Yale Program in Addiction Medicine recently launched the Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Service (YAMCS) to meet the needs of hospitalized patients with substance-use disorders.
YAMCS is a multidisciplinary service supported by Yale New Haven Hospital and led by Melissa Weimer, DO, who is board-certified in addiction medicine and internal medicine. During its pilot phase, YAMCS is seeing Medicine service inpatients at the Saint Raphael Campus. As the program grows, it will expand to inpatients in other units at both campuses.
YAMCS assesses and engages patients around their substance-use treatment needs; offers medication and brief behavioral treatments for opioid, tobacco and alcohol-use disorders; helps treat opioid, benzodiazepine and alcohol withdrawal; advises on pain management in patients with substance-use disorders; and links patients with addiction treatment after hospitalization.
The most effective YAMCS referrals are for patients interested in seeking substance-use disorder treatment. Appropriate patients include those with any injection substance use, acute substance withdrawal and/or those hospitalized with substance-use medical complications, such as endocarditis/osteomyelitis, abscesses or alcohol-related medical conditions.
YAMCS consults must be initiated by a medical provider consult order and will be available Monday - Friday, 8 am -5 pm. For more information, contact Dr. Weimer: [email protected].
