Stonington students create Bravery Bags for Westerly Hospital
For a child, a trip to the hospital ED can be overwhelming. Bravery Bags, like the one shown by this young recipient in the Westerly Hospital ED, can help make children feel more comfortable, with toys, snacks and coloring books.
Students from West Vine Street School in Stonington recently delivered 30 “Bravery Bags” to Westerly Hospital for children receiving care or accompanying a family member being treated in the Emergency Department.
The Bravery Bags were a community service project for 23 fourth- and fifth-graders in the school’s Student Leadership after-school program. The bags include travel-sized products, snacks, coloring books and crayons, fidget toys, stuffed animals and handmade cards from the students.
“This was a nice way for our students to participate in something where they feel they can make a difference,” said Kristen Morehouse, Stonington schools’ curriculum coordinator. “This was very powerful for them.”
“As an Emergency Department we are touched by their kindness,” said Bethany Gingerella, RN, Westerly Hospital ED nurse manager. “These bags are a very thoughtful and compassionate gesture to make a difference both in the community and for our patients.”
