In 1975, 41 students in the last graduating class of the Grace-New Haven School of Nursing marched with their instructors from the former Grace Educational Building (now the location of Smilow Cancer Hospital) to Yale University’s Harkness Auditorium to receive their diplomas. The school’s closing was part of a national trend to move nursing education to college and university programs. The Grace-New Haven School of Nursing originated at Grace Hospital in 1895, graduating 1,945 nurses during its 80 years. The Alumnae Association, which began in 1901, held its last meeting in September 2023. Alumnae are encouraged to donate memorabilia to the YNHH Archives (203-688-5450 or [email protected]).
