Great Catch winners help YNHH become a high reliability organization
Tina Zukowski, RN; Shannan Allen
Congratulations to these Great Catch winners for modeling HRO safety behaviors and taking action to improve patient safety.
Outpatient
Tina Zukowski, RN, Smilow Hematology Oncology Infusion Therapy, was recognized for attention to detail when a patient who had recently had a tracheostomy arrived with excessive face swelling. Zukowski immediately escalated her concerns to the provider. After an evaluation, the patient was transported to the Emergency Department for further intervention. Zukowski’s use of CHAMP behaviors prevented a life-threatening event for the patient.
Inpatient
Shannan Allen, environmental services associate, was recognized for attention to detail, escalation of concerns and 200% accountability. While cleaning a room, Allen noticed the nonverbal patient was in distress and acted quickly to get help from Michaela Fuehrer, RN, who was nearby. Fuehrer determined that the patient was choking and performed abdominal thrusts to clear his airway while Allen remained in the room to assist and offer support. Due to Allen’s use of CHAMP behaviors, a negative outcome was avoided.
