There's a saying that goes, "Music soothes the mind and gives it a rest, heals the heart and makes it whole." Art Expression Coordinator Dana Shaffer put this into practice to help a patient who wanted to play the piano in the Smilow lobby before her scheduled surgery to help relax. Shaffer acquired the necessary permissions, giving the patient the opportunity for her own "performance." When she finished, the patient closed her music book and said, "I'm off to surgery."

A patient brought to the ED by ambulance also arrived with her two small children. Staff called the children's grandmother, who became distraught that the children, because of the rush, did not have food, diapers or clothing. Visitor receptionists Patricia Rivers-Barnes and Natonna Ellis and Glass Door Gift Shop clerk Marsha Frazier gathered the necessities, comforted the family and offered prayers so the grandmother felt cared for and ready to support her daughter.
