Physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs) and nurses across Yale New Haven Health and Yale Medicine are urged to sign up for a new course, “Enhancing Relationship-Centered Communication,” offered through YNHHS Patient Experience.
During this one-day workshop, participants will discover how communication can improve health outcomes, patient satisfaction and professional engagement. The session includes didactic presentations, live demonstrations and practice activities with guided feedback to enhance relationship-centered communication skills. Each class is limited to 12 participants to encourage active participation. The goal of this course is to improve interactions between healthcare professionals and patients, as well as conversations with colleagues and staff. The workshop also teaches clinicians to be more mindful in their approach with patients and families.
Auguste H. Fortin VI, MD, professor of Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, a sponsor and leader of the training, says that data from other participating health systems point to better outcomes for patients and their healthcare teams. In consultation with the Academy of Communication in Healthcare, YNHHS personalized the training to teach physicians, APPs and nurses together in a peer-led environment. Each class is co-led by a nurse partnered with a physician or APP.
