As year-end nears, PIP results remain steady
Performance Incentive Plan (PIP) results through the third quarter of fiscal year 2017, which ended June 30, reflected strong performance in most areas.
PIP results are measured in four hospital-wide performance areas: patient safety and quality, patient/family experience, employee engagement and financial performance. Each category receives equal weight of 25 percent.
Patient safety and quality includes two measures:
Hospital-acquired infections, which reports the number of patients who contracted certain infections from their hospital stays, exceeded the maximum goals in the third quarter.
Joint Commission Accreditation - The Joint Commission conducted its triennial accreditation survey earlier this year. Results exceeded the maximum goal and YNHH was reaccredited.
Patient experience measures patients’ and families’ experiences at YNHH as expressed in Press Ganey surveys. It includes three measures:
Overall inpatient measures patient experience from adult units on both New Haven campuses and from Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital campuses. Results for the third quarter reached threshold goals.
Ambulatory Services measures overall experience at ambulatory surgery, Heart and Vascular outpatient centers, Diagnostic Radiology, Oncology outpatient and other areas. This measure exceeded maximum goals.
Emergency Department measures the patient experience in the York Street adult and pediatric, Saint Raphael Campus and Shoreline Medical Center emergency departments. It exceeded the threshold goal.
Employee engagement includes employee participation in two initiatives – the Employee Engagement Survey and the Know Your Numbers Plus employee wellness program. Survey participation exceeded the maximum goals. Participation results from the Know Your Numbers Plus program, currently under way, will be available later in the year.
Financial performance includes the sole measure of the hospital’s operating margin. For the third quarter of FY17, the hospital’s net operating margin exceeded the maximum goal.
