Richard Worms, observation associate, Pediatric Emergency Department, was transporting two children and their mother from Urgent Care in the Hunter Building via the second-floor bridge to the South Pavilion when the mother collapsed. Worms began CPR until the Code Team arrived. While his actions helped resuscitate the woman, he also spoke up for safety and used ARCC (ask a question; request a change; communicate a concern; use chain of command) to suggest that the hospital install an automatic defibrillator in this heavily trafficked area.
Tina Bartolo, ER technician, interacted with a patient who had initially been unresponsive. Displaying a questioning attitude, she noticed that the patient's smile appeared crooked. Bartolo used ARCC and shared her concern with a nurse and physician, who called a code for a stroke. Thanks to Bartolo's great catch, the patient received appropriate care within the standard timeframe for a potentially serious stroke.
