Hospital awarded Commission on Cancer reaccreditation

The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), recently granted three-year accreditation to Bridgeport Hospital as an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program.

To earn this accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process and maintain excellence in delivering comprehensive patient-centered care. CoC care standards include a review of processes and outcomes with a focus on the full continuum of care.

“This reaccreditation recognizes our commitment to excellence and continuous efforts to improve patient outcomes,” said Anne Diamond, DBA, JD, Bridgeport Hospital president. “It’s also a result of the hard work and dedication of our highly skilled team of healthcare professionals, who strive to deliver personalized, compassionate care to each and every patient.”

During the March site visit, surveyors highlighted key aspects of Bridgeport Hospital’s program:

• The administration is committed to the cancer program and supports the cancer committee members at the hospital.
• Cancer committee members work closely together with a patient-centric philosophy. The program’s notable strengths include a dedicated and motivated chair and cancer liaison physician who acts as quality champion for the program.
• The hospital has a highly functioning genetic counseling program and strong survivorship, nutrition and rehabilitation programs.  
• Committee members work diligently to improve the patients’ survivorship and remain the backbone of this flourishing program.
