Congratulations to these Great Catch winners for modeling HRO safety behaviors and taking action to improve patient safety.
Mary Pat Murray, RN, Emergency Department, was recognized for practicing a questioning attitude, attention to detail and using active-listening skills while caring for a patient who presented with nasal congestion and cough. Murray asked the patient about chest pain, but the patient refocused his complaints on his nasal congestion. When the patient’s wife expressed concerns about possible chest pain, Murray encouraged the patient to consent to an EKG. Results showed changes that might indicate a cardiac event. Murray’s use of various CHAMP behaviors helped prevent a potentially negative outcome for the patient.
Carole Palmer-Plourde, RN, Hematology/Oncology (NP 11), was recognized for attention to detail, practicing a questioning attitude and critical-thinking skills that saved a patient’s life. She was helping another nurse hang fluids for a patient, who was eating when she entered the room. Palmer-Plourde saw the patient attempting to stand up and immediately determined that the patient was choking. She called for help and began providing the Heimlich maneuver on the patient, who started to seize before becoming unresponsive. Palmer-Plourde reacted quickly and began CPR. Thanks to her quick response and use of HRO behaviors, the patient’s spontaneous circulation returned before the code team arrived.
