National Patient Safety Awareness Week is March 11 - 17, and employees are invited to kick off the week at 8:15 am Monday, March 12, in the 55 Park St. auditorium (with Livestreaming to the SRC Cronin Auditorium), after Morning Safety Report. The week will also include PowerPoint displays on various safety topics: 9 am - 3 pm Tuesday, March 13, Saint Raphael Campus cafeteria; and 9 am - 3 pm Thursday, March 15, York Street Campus East Pavilion cafeteria. Safety Week events are cosponsored by the hospital’s Nursing Shared Governance Quality and Safety Council and Quality Improvement Support Services.
March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme “Go Further with Food,” promotes healthy eating while saving money and environmental resources. YNHH’s dietetic interns will host an information table on sustainable eating, 11:30 am - 1 pm Tuesday, March 13, York Street Campus cafeteria. Each Wednesday during March, chefs will hold demonstrations from 11:30 am - 1 pm in the cafeterias at both campuses, and dietitians will provide recipes and information on tools and resources for healthy eating.
March 15 is the deadline to incur a healthcare flexible spending account (FSA) expense and have it applied to any 2017 healthcare FSA balance you may still have. The filing deadline for all 2017 FSA claims (health care and dependent care) is March 31. YNHH will accept applications for advanced practice nursing (APRN) scholarships April 1 - 30. Applicants should apply online through Employee Self Service (under the Career tab) for the Marna P. Borgstrom and Peter N. Herbert, MD, Yale New Haven Hospital Advanced Nursing Education Scholarships. The scholarships provide tuition assistance of up to $10,000 annually to qualified employees working toward advanced nursing education to meet requirements for an APRN license. YNHH’s Heart and Vascular Center recently received the highest Composite Quality Rating in four procedure categories from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Database. YNHH received the three-star rating for isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR); combined AVR and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG); mitral valve repair and replacement (MVRR); and combined MVRR and CABG. YNHH is one of the few cardiac surgery programs in the U.S. to receive this recognition of multiple three-star ratings, and the only Connecticut cardiac center to be so highly ranked.
For the seventh consecutive year, Best Workplaces for Commuters (BWC) has designated YNHH a Best Workplace for Commuters 2018 for providing employees alternative transportation options. This year, BWC recognized 200 organizations that meet or exceed the national standard of excellence in commuter benefits created by the National Center for Transit Research and US Environmental Protection Agency. YNHH’s Transportation Demand Management program offers alternatives to single-occupancy vehicle use, with shuttle services, public transportation subsidies, car- and van-pooling and other options. The program helps address parking challenges; demonstrates environmental excellence by reducing gasoline demand, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution; and exhibits corporate citizenship.
