Yale New Haven Health System

Follow these simple steps to keep yourself safe

Security Vehicle

With the shorter days of winter upon us, employees are encouraged to follow these tips, especially when entering hospitals and other health system facilities and in parking areas:

  • When using your photo ID to enter a building or restricted area, be aware of anyone trying to come in behind you without a hospital or health system ID badge or visitor sticker.
  • Report suspicious activity, people or items by calling your delivery network’s security department. A dispatcher will immediately summon an officer to respond and contact local police if necessary.
  • When entering an elevator alone, stand near the operating panel, which includes an emergency button. Many elevators have cameras. If someone enters the elevator and you don’t feel safe, leave immediately.

Additional seasonal safety tips include:

  • Use hospital shuttles or request an escort by calling your delivery network’s security department.
  • If you do walk to and from your vehicle, establish a buddy system.
  • Whenever possible, park in well-lit areas.
  • Always have your keys ready so you can enter your vehicle quickly and immediately lock your doors.
  • If someone threatens you or demands your possessions, hand items over. Do not engage the person.
  • When possible, avoid carrying handbags, totes and backpacks. Conceal jewelry and high-value items while outside hospital facilities.
  • Always wear your employee ID badge above the waist and keep it visible.
  • If you see something or someone suspicious, take evasive action and don’t be afraid to call for help.
