The state of Connecticut recently passed Senate Bill 213 allowing certified medical assistants (CMAs) to administer vaccines in any setting other than a hospital. After completing the required training and obtaining certification CMAs may administer vaccines only under the direction of a licensed physician or advanced practice provider.
Before passing the bill, Connecticut was one of only two states which did not permit CMAs to administer vaccines. Northeast Medical Group Quality and Safety nursing staff began training MA II employees after the bill was passed.
The advantage to having CMAs administer vaccines in the outpatient setting is that it helps clinicians with patient care during significant nursing shortages. Additionally, the training helps CMAs increase their knowledge and patient interaction.
