Park Avenue Ambulatory Surgery Center hosts high school students

A group of Trumbull High School seniors
A group of Trumbull High School seniors explored what it’s like to work in an operating room at PAMC with Al Mestuzzi, RN; Kerry Root, RN; and Lauren Bogert, surgical tech.

The Park Avenue Ambulatory Surgery Center (PAMC) recently sponsored an annual healthcare career program, inviting Trumbull High School seniors to experience a snapshot of careers available at PAMC.

Students got an up-close look at the operating room during immersive sessions in which they suited up alongside nurses and surgical techs to witness a mock operating procedure. Students observed how patients were set up in a sterile environment for surgery and engaged with professionals in a relaxed, interactive and informative setting.

The unique opportunity sparked curiosity, and students asked questions to learn more about the OR team.

As healthcare organizations face a growing shortage of OR workers, initiatives like this aim to inspire the next generation at a pivotal time when students begin to consider their futures. PAMC has seen success with the program, with several students returning as volunteers and expressing interest in pursuing OR jobs.
