Olivia Greco, RN, (left) and Lizete Dos Santos, RN, West Tower 7/Oncology received the September Patient Experience Award for Caring and Excellence.
A recent West Tower 7 patient required emergency chemotherapy. Any delay could have been life-threatening. Certification is required to administer chemotherapy; unfortunately, no certified nurse was available at night.
Without hesitation, Oncology Unit day-shift nurses Dos Santos and Greco worked together to ensure the patient received chemotherapy without delay. Dos Santos stayed to work a double shift until 11 pm, and Greco volunteered to work overnight, ensuring 24 hours of chemotherapy coverage.
Both nurses made personal sacrifices and coordinated the highest level of quality care to ensure the patient received the care they needed.
