On March 9, 2020, Bridgeport Hospital confirmed its first COVID-19 patient. Yale New Haven Health System had been preparing for COVID for a couple months, but the first patient’s arrival launched one of the most difficult periods in the health system’s history.
Most employees and physicians had never dealt with a pandemic, but everyone – regardless of role or department – did whatever was necessary to care for our patients, our communities and one another.
The pandemic has taught us a lot about responding to large-scale events. We have made lasting improvements in care and operations. We have also faced – and continue to face – significant challenges.
