Michelle Oliver, RN, Labor & Delivery, won the Great Catch Award for attention to detail that saved a baby’s life. Oliver was assisting a 32-week pregnant patient and noticed something was wrong. Oliver discovered a cord prolapse, a rare complication in which the umbilical cord comes out of the uterus before the baby. Oliver quickly eliminated the cord compression and called for the obstetrics team to do an emergency C-section. The baby was born prematurely and taken to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Both mom and baby are doing well.
Kristen Williams, CT/diagnostic technologist, was comparing a patient’s previous and new scans for a routine aortic aneurysm follow-up. Noticing an abnormality in the new scan, she escalated her concern, and the CT care team urgently consulted with the radiologist. The radiologist identified the abnormality as an aortic dissection and immediately transferred the patient to the Emergency Department. Williams’ actions and the radiologist’s response illustrate optimal team collaboration, which is crucial for safe and effective patient care.
