I’m really enjoying Gioia in Wooster Square in New Haven. Not only do I enjoy the delicious food, vibrant atmosphere and upbeat vibe, I love that ‘gioia’ means joy in Italian and when I walk into the space, it does indeed spark just a bit of joy! Reservations are hard to come by…probably isn’t a good idea for me to be sharing it in this newsletter!
Over the course of my career, I’ve definitely become a morning person. Frequently having to meet with surgeons who often started their surgical cases by 7 am, I recall many 6 am meetings, especially when I was responsible for Perioperative Services. Starting the day early soon became a habit, and it’s one that continues. Even on weekends, I like to get a jump on the day, beating everyone in my weekend errands – grocery shopping, cleaners, Target runs! I think many colleagues are shocked that I haven’t embraced home delivery or online shopping. I enjoy the early morning quietness and the new opportunity for a fresh start every day.
Two things keep me motivated in our work. The first is seeing the successful outcomes of our collective efforts – whether it’s focused quality, patient experience, employee engagement or financial performance/growth. There’s nothing more satisfying than achieving our shared goals and celebrating them with so much pride and sense of accomplishment. Second, I truly love to mentor and coach. I savor the excitement when those I’m mentoring accomplish their personal goals, whether going back to school, landing the dream job or finding the ideal personal-professional life balance that they desire. The “aha” moments that happen are extraordinary and it’s nice to know that I’ve helped someone in their journey of self-discovery and fulfillment. It really is satisfying!
