Since its founding in 1903, Greenwich Hospital has evolved from a humble 24-bed facility to a 206-bed regional medical center and teaching institution. Here are some quick, interesting facts about the hospital, which joined Yale New Haven Health in 1998.
GH has a national reputation for its patient safety, clinical excellence and customer service. Its many honors include the Press Ganey 2023 Human Experience Pinnacle of Excellence Award.
The hospital was founded by husband and wife Fritz and Harriet Baker Hyde, both doctors.
GH comprises two buildings, the Leona and Harry B. Helmsley Medical Building and Thomas and Olive C. Watson Pavilion.
Harriet Hyde, MD, created the Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing, which graduated its first class in 1909 and operated until 1975.
The Thrift Shop, run by volunteers, hit a milestone this year, raising more than $1 million to support the hospital.
In 1923, GH’s laboratory was the first inspected by the Connecticut Department of Health’s Inspection and Approval Program. It passed unconditionally and remains the oldest approved, continuously operated laboratory in the state.
GH became the first Fairfield County hospital to create a “clean air” environment by going smoke-free.
GH has 1,900 employees with approximately 590 nurses.
