When a potentially suicidal patient was put on one-to-one observation, Phillie Shepherd, patient care assistant, L+M Hospital, propped open the bathroom door to maintain a line of sight to ensure the patient’s safety. Shepherd’s strict adherence to protocol helped save the patient from harm. Once in the bathroom, the patient grabbed the red call light string and attempted to harm themself. Shepherd responded immediately and with help from Lauren Limauge, RN, quickly cut the string from the patient. “The quick response in a highly volatile situation ensured that this patient was not harmed,” said Teresa Meyer, RN, Quality and Safety team specialist. “Thank you, Lauren and Phillie, for ensuring our high-risk patients with suicide ideation are kept safe by following our policies and acting quickly to prevent self-harm.”
