Greenwich Hospital’s Maternity department recently implemented a practice change as part of its ongoing efforts to promote safe sleep.
The department now uses the Halo SleepSack, a wearable blanket that keeps babies warm and safely bundled. Supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the SleepSack decreases the risks associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It is made of a breathable cotton material that provides warmth and decreases the chance of overheating; has a wide bottom to promote healthy hip development by allowing babies to move their legs while swaddled; and is designed to decrease the risk of the infant’s mouth/nose inadvertently being covered.
At discharge, the hospital provides parents with a Halo SleepSack and safe sleep education. Modeling safe sleep practices in the hospital helps reinforce these behaviors at home.
